No other state offers more benefits to her veterans than Texas, but many remain unaware of the vast resources and entitlements available exclusively for Texas veterans and active military. Along with the federal services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), there are many state benefits that can be found simply by calling the Texas Veterans Hotline or visiting the Texas Veterans Portal.
Texas Veterans Portal
The Texas Veterans Portal is a convenient way to access resources specifically for Texas veterans, their families and their survivors. Visiting the website or calling 1-800-252-8387 will open the door to assistance, important forms, information and services from numerous government agencies in areas regarding benefits, education, health and employment. The Texas Veterans Portal is a collaborative effort of several state agencies and commissions including the Texas Veterans Commission, VLB, Texas Workforce Commission, 2-1-1 (Texas Health and Human Services Commission) and TexVET.
Texas Veterans Commission
The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) is a state agency created to serve Texas Veterans, their dependents and survivors in all matters concerning claims representation, employment services and veterans education. TVC also operates the Taps for Vouchers program to encourage students in grades 6-12 to sound Taps as part of the military honors funerals held in Texas for deceased veterans. Details outlining these and other services for Texas veterans offered by TVC can be found in their brochure. The Texas Veterans Hotline is also a valuable resource provided to active and retired military personnel through a partnership between TVC and VLB. Veterans may access the Hotline at 1-800-252-8387 with questions regarding their benefits.
Texas Veterans Land Board
The VLB was created in 1946 to help make land available to veterans after World War II. Since then, VLB has dramatically expanded its services. Today, VLB manages a billion dollar loan program and oversees eight long-term care facilities and four state cemeteries. This allows VLB to offer unbeatable, below market interest rates on home, home improvement and land loans, as well as opportunities for veterans to purchase forfeited land before they are available to the public. Also, because of a partnership formed with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), much of the out-of-pocket expenses to stay in one of the VLB State Veterans Homes is well below average and includes the cost of medications for residents. VLB State Cemeteries are exclusively for veterans, their spouses and dependent children and serve as an expression of our respect for the men and women who have served with distinction.
The VLB is honored to serve the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for our nation’s freedom. For more information regarding VLB or any services provided for Texas veterans, call 1-800-252-8387 or visit TexasVeterans.com.
